What is Copper Sulphate Pentahydrate?

Copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO₄·5H₂O) is a copper salt with a bright blue crystal structure and high solubility in water. Thanks to its high purity and versatile properties, it has a wide range of uses in agriculture, animal husbandry, aquaculture, mining, galvanization, textile, wood and chemical industries.

Main Areas of Use

1) Agriculture (Fungicide and Fertilizer)

    •    Fungal diseases: It is the main component of the claret mixture, which is used especially in viticulture to prevent downy mildew and fungal diseases in vegetables.

    •    Micronutrient: Provides the copper element necessary for plants.

2) Livestock

    •    Feed additive: It is used as a mineral supplement in rations.

    •    Foot baths: Preferred in the treatment of foot rot in cattle and sheep.

3) Aquaculture and Water Management

    •    Algicide: Prevents algae growth in ponds and irrigation canals.

    •    Fish health: It can be applied in the treatment of parasites in fish in controlled doses.

4) Mineral Enrichment

    •    Flotation activator: It enables the separation of Cu-Pb-Zn ores by activating sphalerite (ZnS) minerals.

5) Metal Plating and Electrotechnics

    •    Electrolyte: Used as soluble salt in copper plating baths.

    •    PCB production: It is preferred for copper coatings in the electronics industry.

6) Textile, Leather and Paper

    •    Mordant: Strengthens the adhesion of dyestuffs to the fibers.

    •    Leather and paper: Used as an auxiliary chemical in processing processes.

7) Wood and Construction

    •    Wood preservative: It is found in impregnation formulations against termites, fungi and pests.

    •    Concrete admixture: Used to increase durability in certain special applications.

    •    Pigment/chromophore: The use of copper sulfate (and other copper salts) to obtain blue-green tones in glass/ceramic is among the classic “minor” applications.

8) Chemistry and Laboratory

    •    Reagent: Used in the preparation of analytical reagents such as Fehling's solution.

    •    Catalyst: It serves as an oxidation catalyst in organic syntheses.
