What is Manganese Sulfate Monohydrate?

Manganese sulfate (most commonly monohydrate, MnSO₄·H₂O) is a pale pink crystalline manganese salt that is highly soluble in water. It is one of the most commonly used forms of manganese (Mn) as a micronutrient source in agriculture. It is also an important raw material in feed premixes, food enrichment/supplementation, battery chemistry, chemical synthesis, and ceramics/glass.

Main Areas of Application

1. Agriculture (Fertilizers and Plant Nutrition)

• Micronutrient source: Provides Mn, which is essential for photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, and numerous enzymes.

2. Feed Industry (Animal Nutrition)

• Premix/Food additive: Enzyme function, connective tissue development; bone-cartilage and eggshell quality in poultry.

3. Food (Enriching & Supplementing Foods)

• Manganese source: It can be used as a source of Mn in some fortified foods and food supplements.

4. Batteries and Electrochemistry

• Precursor for cathodes: MnSO₄ solution is the main raw material for Mn compounds used in Li-ion cathodes.

• EMD/EMM production: It is a process solution/precursor in the production of electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) and electrolytic manganese metal (EMM).

5. Chemistry and Industrial Applications

• Intermediate/Reagent: A starting material in the synthesis of various manganese oxide/carbonate and similar compounds.

• Catalysis/analytical: Used as a source of Mn(II) in some catalytic and laboratory applications.

6. Ceramics and Glass

• Precursor to colorants: A precursor in the production of Mn oxides used in ceramic glazes and glass. Color adjustment/decolorization (with oxide forms) is achieved in the final product.

7. Aquaculture & Aquariums

• Trace element supplementation: Trace Mn source for reef and planted aquariums (in low-dose/trace element mixtures).
